The Objectives

  • To reward and honour those who "cook with words".
  • Help readers find the best out of the 24000 food and wine-books produced every year.
  • To help publishers with international rights to translate and distribute food and wine books.
  • To help bookstores find the best books to display.
  • To create an opportunity to access the major markets in English, German, Spanish or French for books originated in other languages.
  • To increase knowledge of, and respect for, food and wine culture, which promotes peace.

The Jury


              The international jury for all languages and the 'Best in the World' is composed of :

  • Edouard Cointreau, Chairman of the Awards Committee.
  • Dun Gifford, President of the Oldways Exchange and Trust Foundation (USA)
  • Jean Jacques Ratier, Commissaire du Salon International du Livre Gourmand, Mayor of Sorges (France)
  • Bo Masser, Director of Booktown Grythyttan (Sweden)

              "Viji Varadarajan wins World Gourmand award for 5 of her cookbooks in 6 different categories":

  • 'Samayal - The Pleasures of South Indian Vegetarian Cooking' has won the finalist in Gourmand World Cookbook Award in the category of "BEST VEGETARIAN COOKBOOK" for 2008.
  • 'Festival Samayal - An Offering To the Gods' has won the finalist in Gourmand World Cookbook Award in the category of "BEST LOCAL COOKERY BOOK" for 2008
  • 'A Healthy Taste Of Indian Culture - Cooking With Yoghurt' has won the finalist in Gourmand World Cookbook Award in the category of "BEST SINGLE SUBJECT COOKBOOK" for 2008 And as "THE BEST HEALTH AND NUTRITION BOOK IN THE WORLD" for 2008
  • 'The French Cookbook' has just won "THE SPECIAL JURY AWARD" for 2009
  • Classic Tamil Brahmin Cuisine co-authored by Viji Varadarajan and Padmini Natarajan – that is presently out of print - won the”Gourmand Special Jury Award” for 2009.
  • The French Cookbook co-authored by Sophie Girot and Viji Varadarajan won “The Best Translated Cookbook In the World” Second Place in 2010. This book has now been reprinted as “Saveurs subtiles du Sud de l’Inde”

In order to fully represent the diversity of food and drink publishing around the world, Gourmand World Cookbook Awards has 36 categories for cookbooks and 14 for wine books. The nominees and the winners are posted on the www.cookbookfair.com internet website.
